Google Translate rival DeepL cuts 25% of workforce

DeepL, a Cologne-based startup that makes translation software, said on May 7 it plans to cut about 250 jobs, or roughly 25% of its workforce, as CEO Jarek Kutylowski linked the move to a “massive structural shift” driven by AI.

The company said DeepL is reshaping its operations to reduce management layers and speed decisions.

Founded in 2017 as a rival to Google Translate, DeepL now also faces competition from ChatGPT and other AI translation tools,

It raised US$300 million at a US$2 billion valuation in 2024 while considering a US initial public offering.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Layoffs came after a move toward enterprise sales

  • DeepL raised an extra US$300 million in May 2024. The company planned to use it for sales, marketing, research, and development 1.
  • At that point, DeepL was not profitable, and estimates put its headcount at about 1,555 1.
  • DeepL wanted to lean further into enterprise work by building a stronger outbound sales team, a group that reaches out to business customers directly, said Jarek Kutylowski, CEO of DeepL 1.

IPO plans face pressure from broader AI rivals

  • The cuts may make a U.S. initial public offering (IPO) harder. DeepL had weighed a listing that could value it at up to US$5 billion 2.
  • Competition in AI apps is growing. Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and possibly OpenAI and Anthropic can all move into translation and writing tools 1.
  • That pressure can steer specialist software firms toward harder enterprise products, where sales execution and customer ties matter alongside technical skill 1.
