Google to launch AI-powered smart glasses in 2026
Google revealed new details about its AI-powered glasses and XR ecosystem at its I/O event.
The company is working with Samsung, Gentle Monster, and Warby Parker to develop lightweight smart glasses with Android XR, expected to launch next year.
The glasses will come in two types: one for screen-free AI assistance using built-in speakers, microphones, and cameras, and another with an in-lens display for showing information like navigation and translation.
The Android XR platform will support a range of devices, and Google has released the third developer preview of its XR SDK to encourage app development for these glasses.
Google is gathering feedback from testers and will provide more updates on device availability in the future.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Android Extended Reality (XR) hardware requirements remain unclear despite Developer Preview 3 (DP3) release
- Public Android XR documentation still does not spell out compute architecture for smart glasses 1. Developers must plan for standalone units or phone tethering that offloads processing to a paired smartphone.
- Google has not published minimum device classes or chipset needs beyond Samsung’s headset, so performance and battery targets stay TBD 1.
- Samsung’s Galaxy XR headset runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 and delivers about 2 to 2.5 hours with an external battery pack 2. Power limits for upcoming glasses still lack documentation.
- Google has not issued a Compatibility Definition Document (CDD) style minimum hardware spec 3. Current guidance covers app quality and features, while baseline device needs remain unspecified.
XR tool makers can benefit from Android XR support for OpenXR
- Android XR uses OpenXR (an open standard application programming interface for XR) and supports the Unity game engine 4. Game studios, Quality Assurance (QA) labs, and tool makers can offer porting plus testing services now.
- Meta Quest games such as Demeo, Job Simulator, and Walkabout Mini Golf are headed to Android XR 1. That suggests titles can transfer with proper API support.
- Service teams can time offerings to engine support 5. Unity 6 supports Android XR with AR Foundation (Unity’s augmented reality framework) and XR Interaction Toolkit (Unity’s interaction/input package).
- Android XR supports composition layers (independent UI/video planes blended by the compositor) 4. It also offers foveated rendering (lower detail rendering in peripheral vision to save processing power). Hand tracking is included too, which uses cameras to recognize hands and gestures 4. These features will need specialized testing as teams tune apps past basic compatibility.
