Google plans to invest £5 billion (US$6.8 billion) in the UK, including the launch of a new data center near London, the company announced on September 16.

The new Waltham Cross facility is intended to support demand for Google’s AI-driven services such as Cloud, Search, Maps, and Workspace.

Google, which is owned by Alphabet, said the investment is projected to create 8,250 jobs annually for UK businesses.

The company also revealed a partnership with Shell to help improve grid stability and support Britain’s energy transition.

The Waltham Cross data center features air-cooling technology to reduce water use and is set up to reroute excess heat to nearby homes or businesses.

Google expects its UK operations to run at or near 95% carbon-free energy in 2026, combining clean energy initiatives and the Shell deal.

The announcement comes ahead of a planned visit to the UK by US President Donald Trump, during which several major business deals are anticipated.
