Google has announced that some remote employees must return to the office as part of a hybrid work schedule or risk losing their jobs.

Teams such as Google Technical Services and People Operations have notified remote staff living within 50 miles of an office that they must work in person at least three days a week.

Those who do not comply may face job termination or have the option to accept voluntary exit packages.

A Google spokesperson said individual teams set office return rules to support in-person collaboration and innovation.

Google co-founder, Sergey Brin, previously highlighted the necessity for enhanced efforts in AI development.

He urged AI employees in February 2025 to work in-office every weekday to maintain productivity and competitiveness.
