Google taps Samsung for part of next AI chip, report says

Google is in talks with Samsung Electronics to manufacture part of its next AI chip, according to a June 11 report. The report said TSMC would produce the main component.

The report could not be independently verified.

The report said Samsung could use its 2-nanometer process to build a component that links the tensor processing unit to memory.

It added that Google is working with MediaTek, a Taiwan-based chip designer, on the design, and that Icefish remains in development, with mass production possible as early as 2028.

That timing would put Icefish several years after Google introduced Ironwood in April 2025, saying it would become available later that year.

Earlier report said Google was in talks with Intel to manufacture more than 3 million TPUs in 2028, suggesting it may be considering multiple manufacturing partners for its in-house AI chip plans.
