Google sues alleged scam network over Gemini abuse
Google filed a lawsuit in the US on June 12 against Outsider Enterprise, an alleged China-based cybercrime network, saying the group used AI to send 2.5 million scam texts to Android users over two weeks in May to steal personal information.
The complaint said the group coordinated on Telegram, impersonated Google and other brands, and urged members to use Gemini to write code for fake websites that sought confidential data.
Google also said Android users flagged 55,000 spam texts during the same period.
The company linked the operation to 9,000 fake websites and more than 1 million fraudulent URLs.
Google said it worked with telecom operators in the US, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, to block messages before they reached victims, and also coordinated with law enforcement in the US.
Outsider Enterprise does not appear to be an established public cybersecurity research name.
