Google begins building AI hub in India under $15b plan

Google held a groundbreaking ceremony on April 28 for its largest AI hub outside the US, in Visakhapatnam, India.

The campus will include a gigawatt-scale data center to support computing for products such as Gemini and Search, said Bikash Koley, vice president at Google.

The project follows a US$15 billion investment plan announced in October 2025.

The development could position Visakhapatnam as an AI and deep-tech hub. Google said new subsea cable landings and fiber routes could strengthen India’s digital infrastructure.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

State support and local partners behind Google’s Indian AI hub

  • Andhra Pradesh backed the project with incentives worth 220 billion rupees (US$2.33 billion). The package includes 495 acres at a lower price plus a 15-year power discount 1.
  • Google is working with AdaniConneX, a data center joint venture, on the campus. Bharti Airtel, one of India’s largest telecom operators, will build the new international subsea cable gateway and related fiber links 2.
  • The gigawatt-scale site will use about half of Mumbai’s yearly electricity demand. It brings computing, network capacity, and energy systems together, with new clean power and storage built for the campus 1.

AI buildout is changing energy demand and supply chains

  • Google’s plan sits inside a wider spending surge. Alphabet expects capital expenditure of US$175 billion to US$185 billion in 2026, much of it tied to AI infrastructure 3.
  • Across the sector, data center spending is forecast to top US$1 trillion that year as demand for AI hardware keeps rising 4.
  • The project moves ahead even with U.S.-India trade tensions. It also fits with the India AI Mission, the Indian government’s national AI development program 1.
  • Data center builders now buy large amounts of clean energy through power purchase agreements. That could reshape Andhra Pradesh’s power market as Google and its partners add transmission lines, clean generation, and storage systems 5.
