Google secures 3.6GW of power from Constellation Energy
Google has agreed to buy 3,590 megawatts of power from Constellation Energy, a Maryland-based power producer and the largest US nuclear plant operator, in PJM, the largest US power grid. About a quarter of the supply will come from added nuclear output.
One contract is a 20-year power purchase agreement for 890 megawatts from Constellation’s nuclear plants that are set for upgrades. The companies expect first deliveries in 2028.
A separate 15-year agreement covers 2,700 megawatts from Constellation in PJM. Google said the supply is not tied to a specific generation source.
Constellation said it would invest more than US$4.3 billion in its fleet, including upgrades to 11 nuclear units in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.
The deal comes as PJM is developing policies for large new power loads and has proposed frameworks for connecting data centers without compromising reliability or affordability.
It also fits a broader industry trend, with tech companies turning to nuclear power to support rising data center demand.
