Google says it won’t block unregistered crypto wallets

Google clarified that it will not ban unregistered non-custodial cryptocurrency wallets from its Play Store in the US, the UK, or other regions.

The company had initially published new policy guidelines last month that appeared to restrict such wallets, with an October 29 deadline for compliance.

After criticism on social media and reports of a possible ban, Google said on X that non-custodial wallets are not covered by its Cryptocurrency Exchanges and Software Wallets Policy.

The company said it will update its Help Center to reflect this clarification.

Google’s updated policy requires cryptocurrency exchanges and software wallets to comply with local laws and industry standards.

In the US, developers offering cryptocurrency-related apps must either register as a Money Services Business with FinCEN and as a state money transmitter, or be a federally or state-chartered bank.

Similar guidance was issued for the UK and the EU.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Google’s crypto policies have evolved from blanket bans to selective regulation

Google’s approach to cryptocurrency applications has shifted dramatically over the years, moving from broad restrictions to more nuanced regulatory compliance requirements.

In March 2018, Google implemented a complete ban on all cryptocurrency-related advertising, including ICOs, wallets, and trading advice, due to concerns over consumer harm in the largely unregulated market1.

Later that same year, Google removed several popular cryptocurrency wallet apps from the Play Store without prior warning, including Bitcoin Wallet and BitPay, which had over 1 million users2.

The current policy represents a middle ground approach. Rather than banning crypto apps entirely, Google now requires specific licensing and regulatory compliance in over 15 jurisdictions3.

This evolution reflects the broader maturation of cryptocurrency regulation, as governments worldwide have developed clearer frameworks for digital assets since 2018.

2️⃣ Regulatory complexity creates market access challenges for smaller developers
