Google rolls out Personal Intelligence feature to challenge Apple
Google has launched a new Personal Intelligence feature in its Gemini app, now in beta for personal account users in the US.
The tool connects information from Google apps like Gmail and Google Photos to give more personalized responses in the chatbot.
The company said the feature is available to AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers, with plans to roll it out to Google’s AI Mode search tool later this year.
Personal Intelligence is off by default and requires user opt-in.
The feature arrives as Google faces competition from Apple Intelligence, which also integrates personal data for AI-powered assistance.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Google’s edge comes from first-party data, not cloud AI
- Data already in Google accounts can tailor replies in Gemini 1. The company calls this an edge.
- Google says it does not train models on Gmail or Google Photos data 1. That eases a privacy worry that has slowed AI use.
- Personal Intelligence stays off by default and needs an explicit opt-in 1. That design makes clear Google knows trust drives app connections. The privacy setup matters as much as the model.
Email senders can boost Gmail visibility with schema.org markup
- Gmail supports schema.org markup 2. It is a shared vocabulary for adding structured data so software can understand and act on content. Gmail can pull details from messages to add calendar events and quick actions in Google services.
- Transactional senders include e-commerce platforms, travel sites, and event organizers that send confirmations, itineraries, and tickets. They should add JavaScript Object Notation for Linked Data (JSON-LD) markup for orders, reservations, and tickets 2. That helps Google services present the content better.
- Some markup features need registration and whitelisting, a pre-approval process 3. Promotional annotations, which add info like deal badges, work without approval 4. Product carousels, which are scrollable product images in the Promotions tab, also work. That gives marketers a fast path to richer inbox placement as Gemini use spreads.
