Google reportedly may face EU fine over Play Store rules in 2026
Google may face a significant EU fine in early 2026 if it does not make further changes to its Google Play app store, according to people familiar with the matter.
The European Commission has found that Google’s recent adjustments to Play Store policies do not fully meet requirements under the Digital Markets Act, which aims to ensure fair competition and consumer choice.
Regulators have focused on technical restrictions that prevent app developers from steering users to cheaper offers outside Google Play, as well as service fees the company charges developers.
Google’s August policy changes are still seen as insufficient, with the EU using Apple’s recent App Store overhaul as a benchmark for compliance.
The company can still propose more changes before any fine is imposed, sources said.
However, the penalty is expected in Q1 2026 if issues remain unresolved.
