Google proposes to change search deals amid antitrust scrutiny

Google has proposed adjustments to its default search engine agreements with Apple and other partners in response to a United States antitrust ruling that deemed the company’s dominance in online search unlawful.

The proposal, submitted Friday, suggests modifying distribution agreements.

Google suggested making these agreements non-exclusive and allowing browser developers, who choose Google as their default search engine, to reconsider their decision yearly.

The DOJ, along with several states, has called for more extensive remedies. These include the termination of revenue-sharing agreements and potentially requiring Google to divest significant products like the Chrome browser or its Android operating system.

The proposals from both parties will be examined further in an April trial.

The DOJ intends to present witnesses from OpenAI, Perplexity AI, and Microsoft to demonstrate how Google’s significant market share stifles competition and innovation in search and AI-powered technologies.

Google has indicated plans to appeal the antitrust ruling once the case concludes.
