Google Play faces Indonesia antitrust ruling this month

Indonesia’s Competition Commission (KPPU) will announce its final decision on Google’s alleged monopoly practices on January 21, 2025.

The case revolves around Google Play Billing (GPB), a system mandating app developers to use GPB for in-app purchases, charging fees of 15%-30%.

This investigation began in September 2022 after Google enforced the policy, penalizing non-compliant developers with app removal or exclusion from updates.

In November 2023, KPPU moved the case to the Filing stage, citing violations of Indonesia’s Law No. 5 Year 1999, followed by hearings in mid-2024.

KPPU’s decision will conclude over two years of inquiry into Google’s business conduct and its implications for Indonesia’s digital marketplace.
