Google Photos blends classic search with AI for faster results
Google has resumed its AI-powered “Ask Photos” feature in Google Photos after resolving performance issues.
The feature, powered by Gemini AI, allows users to search photo collections using natural language.
Users had complained about delays and inaccuracies in search results, prompting Google to halt the rollout temporarily.
In June 2025, Jamie Aspinall, a Google Photos product manager, acknowledged these problems and confirmed that improvements were being made.
Updates now combine elements of classic Google Photos search for faster responses to simple queries, while complex searches are still AI-driven.
The updated feature is available to US users aged 18 and older with English settings and face groups enabled, with a classic search option still accessible.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Google’s strategic shift to AI-first faces real-world user expectations
Google’s Ask Photos issues illustrate the practical challenges in their 8-year-old AI-first strategy, which began in 2016 when CEO Sundar Pichai announced a fundamental shift from mobile-first to AI-first computing 1.
This approach has led Google to integrate AI capabilities across its product lineup, but the company has faced a recurring pattern of ambitious launches followed by practical refinements when real users encounter limitations.
The temporary pause of Ask Photos follows a similar trajectory to Google’s 2018 Duplex demonstration, which also required adjustments after public feedback highlighted gaps between demo capabilities and real-world performance 2.
Google’s solution of falling back to traditional search methods for simple queries while AI works in the background demonstrates a pragmatic compromise between advanced AI capabilities and meeting user expectations for basic functionality and speed.
This hybrid approach addresses a fundamental tension in consumer AI: users want both sophisticated capabilities and instantaneous performance, forcing companies to find creative technical compromises.
2️⃣ Photo management emerges as key AI battleground for tech giants
Google’s investment in AI-powered photo search reflects a broader industry trend, with automated image organization becoming one of the most visible and practical applications of AI for everyday consumers 3.
