Google offers up to $340k as AI talent war heats up
Google has updated its compensation framework to offer higher salaries for key roles.
This change aims to attract and retain top talent as competition in AI intensifies globally.
According to US Labor Department filings, Google now pays software engineers up to US$340,000 in base salary, excluding stock and bonuses.
Other key positions, such as product managers and AI researchers, are also receiving competitive pay packages.
The revision comes as rivals like Meta and OpenAI aggressively pursue elite AI talent.
Meta has significantly increased its investments in AI, with senior researchers reportedly earning between US$600,000 and over US$1 million, including stock and bonuses.
The salary hikes reflect growing demand for talent in large language models and generative AI, as companies fight to retain top researchers.
To stay competitive, Google and others are also boosting equity grants, performance bonuses, and other benefits.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ The AI talent war has deep historical roots and measurable economics
The current compensation battle for AI talent isn’t new but has accelerated dramatically from already high levels established years ago.
Back in 2018, reports indicated fewer than 10,000 qualified AI professionals globally, with exceptional candidates commanding salaries exceeding $200,000 and some reaching $1 million annually 1.
This talent scarcity continues today but at an intensified scale, with Meta now reportedly offering packages between $1-1.4 million for AI roles 2, 3.
The economics of retention clearly justify these astronomical figures. Research shows that even a modest $1 per hour increase in pay can lead to a 2.8% improvement in employee retention rates 4, 5.
For tech companies, where employee knowledge represents critical competitive advantage, preventing talent loss to competitors can directly impact product development timelines and market position, especially in the fast-moving AI sector.
