Google, Nvidia join alliance to manage AI power use
Emerald AI, a US-based startup that makes software to manage data center power use, has teamed up with Google and Nvidia to launch the AI Energy Management Alliance.
The group aims to make demand response a bigger part of data center development and ease grid constraints that can delay new connections.
The coalition also includes Anthropic and utilities such as AES, Constellation, National Grid, and NRG Energy.
Emerald AI said its software can temporarily cut electricity use by pausing noncritical tasks or shifting workloads to other data centers.
Demand response is an established utility tool that pays customers to cut or shift electricity use during periods of grid stress.
Google said it has used it in data centers by moving non-urgent computing to different times or locations.
AEMA said this approach could enable another 100 gigawatts of data centers to connect to the grid.
Emerald AI chief scientist Ayse Coskun said the software can reduce, but not eliminate, the need for new power generation.
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has moved to speed up integration rules for large electricity loads such as data centers.
