Google, Nvidia back Israeli AI firm’s $300m series D

Tel Aviv-based AI21 Labs has raised US$300 million in its series D funding round, with participation from Google and Nvidia.

This brings the total capital raised by the generative AI startup to US$636 million.

The company was founded in 2017 by Amnon Shashua, Yoav Shoham, and Ori Goshen.

AI21 develops large language models (LLMs) for enterprise use. Its tools are used by clients like Capgemini and Wix.

The company previously raised US$208 million in late 2023, backed by Intel Capital and Comcast Ventures, reaching a US$1.4 billion valuation. It continues to focus on generative AI applications for business.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Reliability has become the new frontier in enterprise AI adoption

AI21’s focus on reliability over sheer scale reflects a growing market reality: trust is now the primary barrier to enterprise AI adoption.

According to a global survey of over 48,000 people, only 46% are willing to trust AI systems despite widespread recognition of potential benefits 1.

The trust gap is particularly evident in workplace settings, where 56% of users report making mistakes in their work due to reliance on AI outputs, and 41% of employees express apprehension about using AI tools 1, 2.

McKinsey’s research reveals that while 92% of companies plan to increase AI investments, only 1% consider themselves “mature” in deployment. This suggests that implementation challenges rather than technology limitations are holding back progress 2.

This explains why AI21’s Maestro platform, which focuses on improving instruction-following accuracy of existing models rather than building larger ones, addresses a critical market need for enterprises seeking to move beyond experimentation.

2️⃣ AI orchestration emerges as a critical enterprise capability

AI21’s introduction of Maestro as an “orchestration platform” aligns with an emerging trend in enterprise AI architecture that prioritizes reliable coordination of multiple AI components.

Industry experts are increasingly focused on AI orchestration as essential for governance and management in complex AI workflows, particularly as companies deploy multiple specialized models rather than relying on a single system 3.
