Google may owe $244m in S Korea network fee dispute
Google may have avoided paying up to 347.9 billion won (US$244 million) in network usage fees in South Korea in 2024, according to lawmaker Choi Soo-jin.
Her analysis estimated unpaid fees ranging from 214.7 billion won (US$150.7 million) to 347.9 billion won (US$244.1 million), based on Google Korea’s projected 2024 revenue and its 31.2% share of the country’s internet traffic.
Choi, a member of the National Assembly’s Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee, urged the passage of a bill requiring large foreign content providers to contribute to local network costs.
Google and other tech companies have opposed mandatory fees, citing double billing and net neutrality concerns.
