Google has reportedly limited Meta’s access to its Gemini AI models after the Facebook and Instagram owner sought more computing capacity than Google could supply.

The company reportedly told Meta around March that it could not meet the company’s full Gemini capacity request.

The shortfall delayed some of Meta’s internal AI projects and prompted the company to ask staff to use AI tokens, units that measure AI usage, more efficiently.

Some other Google customers also faced smaller limits.

The episode adds to signs of pressure on Google’s AI infrastructure.

In April, CEO Sundar Pichai said the company faced near-term computing capacity constraints and that Google Cloud’s backlog had doubled to US$462 billion.

The report also comes as Meta plans spend up to US$135 billion on AI in 2026 and deploy millions of chips across its data centers.
