Google launches open-source AI commerce protocol against rivals

Google has launched the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open-source standard to help retailers use AI agents across product discovery, purchasing, and post-purchase support.

Announced at the National Retail Federation’s annual show, UCP was developed with partners including Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, and Target.

The protocol aims to unify the shopping experience by enabling integration across systems and payment methods, starting with Google Wallet and with plans to add others like PayPal.

Google also introduced Business Agent, a chat feature that lets shoppers interact directly with brands, and is testing “Direct Offers” for retailer promotions inside AI Mode.

The move comes as Google faces growing competition from OpenAI, Amazon, and Perplexity in AI-powered commerce.
