Google launches free AI coding assistant for individuals
Google has announced a free version of its AI-based coding tool, Gemini Code Assist, for individual users.
Released on Feb. 25, it offers code completion, debugging, and code explanations through a chat interface integrated with VS Code and JetBrains.
Powered by a variant of the Gemini 2.0 AI model, it provides up to 180,000 code completions per month and 240 daily chat requests, far exceeding GitHub Copilot’s free plan.
It also features a 128,000-token context window for analyzing larger codebases in one request.
Google also launched Gemini Code Assist for GitHub, an AI tool that helps review pull requests, detect potential bugs, and suggest improvements directly within GitHub.
These tools aim to boost developer productivity and strengthen Google’s position in the developer tools market.
The public preview of Gemini Code Assist for individuals is now open for sign-ups.
