Google launches AI search tool to find cheaper flights

Google has launched Flight Deals, an AI-powered search tool in Google Flights, aimed at helping travelers find cheaper flight options.

The feature allows users to enter travel preferences in natural language, such as trip duration or desired activities, and then displays matching flight deals from a range of destinations.

Flight Deals uses Google’s AI to interpret search queries and combines this with real-time data from airlines and booking sites.

The tool is being rolled out in beta over the next week in the US, Canada, and India.

Google Flights will also add an option to exclude basic economy fares for trips in the US and Canada.

Users can access Flight Deals via the Google Flights page or its menu.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Google enters a crowded AI travel market where competitors already dominate

Google’s Flight Deals launch comes as other travel companies have been aggressively deploying AI for years with substantial results.

Booking.com already drives 97% of its marketing spend through data models and algorithms, while its chatbots handle 60% of customer service requests automatically1. Dynamic pricing tools like Hopper are saving travelers an average of $50 per flight, and hotels like Starwood have improved demand forecasting by 20% using AI-powered pricing2.

This suggests Google may be playing catch-up rather than leading innovation in travel AI. The company’s strength lies in its massive flight data infrastructure, but transforming search queries like “week-long trip this winter to a city with great food” into actionable results requires the kind of deep travel expertise that established players have been refining for years.

The competitive pressure is evident, as about 40% of travelers globally are already using AI tools for trip planning3, creating an established market that Google must now capture rather than create.

2️⃣ AI travel tools face persistent accuracy and adoption challenges despite industry optimism

While Google promotes AI as the future of travel search, recent evidence shows significant limitations in AI’s real-world performance compared to traditional tools.

A direct comparison found that Google Flights located a $178 Delta round-trip flight while AI tools suggested less convenient options that weren’t actually available for booking4. This highlights a critical gap between AI’s theoretical capabilities and its practical execution in live travel booking scenarios.
