Google launches AI engineering center in Taiwan

Google has opened its largest AI infrastructure hardware engineering center outside the US in Taiwan.

The new facility in Taipei will support engineering for Google’s global data centers.

Taiwan is a major hub for the global tech supply chain, with local companies such as TSMC supplying chips for firms like Nvidia.

At the launch, Google Cloud VP Aamer Mahmood said technology developed in Taipei is used in Google data centers worldwide.

Taiwan President Lai Ching-te said the move demonstrates Google’s long-term commitment to the island.

US de facto ambassador Raymond Greene highlighted the center as a sign of strong US-Taiwan economic ties.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

  •  Google runs its largest AI hardware engineering hub outside the U.S. in Taipei 1. Hundreds of staff support global data centers. The hub lifts demand for local parts in servers plus power systems, cooling gear and network gear. Taiwan also hosts Google’s first Asia Pacific data center 1.
  • Suppliers of AI server parts such as power delivery systems, liquid cooling solutions, optical interconnects (fiber-based high-speed links between chips and servers) and Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) already serve Google in Taiwan. They may add capacity for what industry sources call a nine-figure commitment 2. Broadcom and MediaTek, both chipmakers, benefit from Google’s Tensor Processing Unit expansion 3.
  • It built Taiwan’s first Asia Pacific data center and funded subsea cables (undersea internet fiber lines) that link Taiwan to the world 1. Its local headcount grew 20-fold over a decade 4.
  • The expansion backs a model of building inside a tight hardware hub with TSMC plus a dense base of engineers 2. The ecosystem links AI design, engineering, manufacturing and deployment. Google taps that base.
  • Google’s Taiwan sites include 240 solar panels, 60% water reduction and low-emission refrigerants (coolants with reduced global warming potential) 4. Those features give cloud and data center teams a template for energy-heavy AI in places with strict environmental rules.
