The United Nations said on September 17 it was working with Google on the UN System Data Commons, a platform built on Google’s open-source Data Commons.

It lets users search statistics from UN agencies in natural language and allows AI systems to query the data directly, replacing the older UNData portal.

The UN said 26 entities had committed to the platform, with data from nearly 20 available at launch.

Google.org provided US$2 million in capacity-building funding and technical support for the platform’s core infrastructure.

UNICEF, the UN agency focused on children and based in New York, said a benchmark of six large language models across more than 133,000 responses on global development indicators found an average accuracy score of 21.2%.

About three in five model responses did not provide a usable number.

The platform shows the source of each statistic, so users can trace AI-generated answers back to the original UN data.

The UN also said AI could bring benefits but posed serious challenges to democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
