Google invests in Japan’s Sakana AI to advance Gemini

Google invested in Japanese startup Sakana AI to support the development of its chatbot Gemini in Japan, according to Bloomberg.

Sakana AI, founded in 2023 and backed by a US$135 million series B funding round last year, aims to leverage Alphabet’s language models to improve product reliability and expand into government sectors.

The startup has already secured contracts with Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group and Daiwa Securities to develop AI tools for finance.

Sakana plans to collaborate more closely with Japan’s Defense Ministry and other agencies and may seek additional capital if its projects in defense and enterprise sectors succeed.
