Google integrates Anthropic’s protocol to enhance AI models

Google has announced plans to integrate Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) into its Gemini models and software development kit (SDK).

The announcement was made by Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis on Apr. 9, 2025 via a post on X.

MCP allows AI models to access and interact with data from various sources, such as business tools and application development environments.

It enables two-way connections between data systems and AI applications, including chatbots, which can improve task completion.

Since Anthropic open-sourced MCP, several companies, including Block, Apollo, Replit, Codeium, and Sourcegraph, have adopted the protocol.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ The emergence of a “USB-C for AI” signals a maturing industry

MCP’s rapid adoption by major AI players like OpenAI and now Google mirrors how computing standards historically emerge as industries mature.

The protocol is being described by industry experts as the “USB-C for AI,” a universal connector that standardizes how AI models access external data and tools 1.

This collaborative approach among fierce competitors mirrors previous technological milestones, such as the adoption of HTTP for web communication and USB for hardware connectivity, which both accelerated innovation by creating common foundations 1, 2.

The speed of adoption is particularly notable. Within just weeks of OpenAI’s announcement, Google has followed suit, suggesting that even the largest AI companies recognize that standardization benefits the entire ecosystem 3, 4.

By creating a common language for AI systems to communicate with data sources, MCP addresses the “N×M problem” of custom integrations that has historically slowed development and increased costs in software 5.

2️⃣ MCP reflects a fundamental shift toward autonomous “agentic” AI

The rapid industry convergence around MCP signals a pivotal moment in AI development, the transition from isolated models to autonomous AI agents capable of independent action.

MCP specifically enables AI systems to discover and utilize external tools on their own, a crucial capability for what the industry calls “agentic AI,” software that can independently perform complex tasks on behalf of users 6, 7.
