Google says Gemini app users doubled in SEA
Google said on July 14 that active users of its Gemini app in Southeast Asia more than doubled over the past year, citing a report on Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
The company said nearly 70% of prompts in the region were submitted in native languages, while almost three in four requests came from mobile devices.
It added that Singapore had Gemini’s highest per capita adoption globally and the highest daily engagement in Southeast Asia.
During the workweek, nearly four in 10 uses in Singapore were for work tasks such as explaining or debugging code.
Google also cited AI Singapore’s Southeast Asia Holistic Evaluation of Language Models (SEA-HELM) benchmark, which evaluates large language models across five core pillars in Southeast Asian languages.
The company said the benchmark backs its claim that Gemini is the top-performing model overall for those languages.
Google did not disclose in the materials reviewed how it defines “active users.”
The company also said Gemini Spark is currently available in English to Google AI Ultra subscribers and would start rolling out in Southeast Asia’s local languages this week, though public Spark documentation reviewed does not list those languages at launch.
