Google faces labor complaint over contractors’ union bid
Google faces a new complaint from the United States National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), alleging that it is a “joint employer” of approximately 50 contract workers in San Francisco employed by IT staffing firm Accenture Flex.
The complaint asserts that Google shares responsibility for the contract workers, potentially mandating collective bargaining with their union.
Meanwhile, an investigation is underway due to accusations of altered working conditions without prior negotiations.
Despite previous denials of sufficient control, Google’s elimination of a US$15-per-hour minimum wage for contractors and other changes raises concerns as the case will be reviewed by an administrative judge, with decisions potentially appealed to the NLRB.
Neither party commented publicly on the ongoing case amid heightened labor organizing efforts.
