Google explores nuclear power as AI demands surge

As AI technology surges, Google is grappling with the need of balancing the soaring energy demands of its AI projects with its ambitious target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2030.

In a recent interview with Nikkei in Tokyo, CEO Sundar Pichai revealed the company’s exploration of nuclear power to satisfy the growing electricity needs, especially fueled by the extensive energy consumption of its generative AI initiatives.

Pichai discussed the potential incorporation of nuclear-generated electricity in Google’s data centers, indicating a proactive shift toward carbon-free energy solutions.

However, the ambitious vision faces significant hurdles. Google’s greenhouse gas emissions increased by 48% in 2023 compared to 2019, largely due to the energy-intensive nature of generative AI technologies.

Acknowledging the scale of these challenges, Pichai pointed to the rapid expansion of AI investments and the necessity of aligning technological advancement with sustainable practices.

Google’s interest in nuclear energy aligns with industry peers like Amazon and Microsoft, which are also eyeing nuclear power as part of their energy strategies.
