Google expands clean energy in India, maps roofs
Google said it is expanding its clean energy work in India with rooftop solar mapping for more than 300 million buildings, a 150-megawatt solar project in Rajasthan, a climate-smart agriculture program in Telangana, and broader climate research.
The company said its Solar API, part of Earth AI, uses AI and high-resolution imagery to estimate a building’s rooftop solar potential remotely.
Google said it has signed a long-term agreement with India-based renewable energy company ReNew for the Rajasthan project.
It said the project is its second Scope 3 solar investment in India.
It also said its program with Mitti Labs, an India-focused climate tech company, will work with smallholder rice farmers in Telangana.
Google said the project is expected to mitigate nearly 3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent over a 20-year global-warming-potential timeframe.
Google added that it has expanded the focus of its climate technology center in India to include freshwater demand, e-waste, and battery recycling.
The company also named four Indian startups to the first Google DeepMind Accelerator cohort.
