Google eases in-car rules after German antitrust deal

Google has reached an agreement with Germany’s Federal Cartel Office to modify its automotive services and maps platform, concluding an antitrust investigation initiated in 2023.

The changes will address competition concerns and will apply across Europe.

The regulator raised concerns about Google’s bundled in-car maps and infotainment systems, arguing that these bundles could limit competitors’ ability to offer similar services.

In response, Google proposed measures to integrate competing maps and applications within its platform.

Under the agreement, Google Automotive Services—which includes Google Maps, Google Play, and Google Assistant—will allow the use of third-party services in vehicle infotainment systems.

Additionally, Google will eliminate contractual restrictions that currently prevent the combined usage of its map services with those of other providers, including Here, Mapbox, and TomTom.
