Google DeepMind vice president John Jumper is leaving for Anthropic, an AI company based in San Francisco. Both companies confirmed.

His exit removes one of DeepMind’s highest-profile scientific leaders. The departure comes as Google tries to strengthen its AI coding business.

Jumper led DeepMind’s AlphaFold work and shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in chemistry with CEO Demis Hassabis for that research.

Google’s main enterprise coding product is Gemini Code Assist, sold in Standard and Enterprise tiers. Google has struggled to sell AI coding tools to businesses. Some DeepMind staff and executives have questioned whether the company has a clear product for business customers seeking such tools.

Anthropic bundles Claude Code in its Claude Enterprise offering.

The market for AI coding assistants is becoming more competitive. Gartner’s 2025 report said GitHub leads the category while also placing Google Cloud among the leaders.
