Google DeepMind starts research team in Singapore

Google DeepMind is establishing a new research team in Singapore focused on advanced reasoning and large language models, according to research scientist Yi Tay.

The team will work on developing and improving models such as Gemini and Gemini Deep Think.

Yi Tay will lead the group, which will report to Quoc Le’s team in Mountain View.

The initial team will be small, with plans to collaborate with AI researchers from both Singapore and overseas.

Google DeepMind has recently made advances in AI with its Gemini models, including achievements in mathematical and programming competitions.

The Singapore-based team is currently hiring for research and engineering roles.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Singapore hub’s mandate remains unclear despite leadership announcement

  • Yi Tay will lead the Singapore team and report to Quoc Le in Mountain View. DeepMind lists 101 global openings and one Singapore role, research scientist, multimodal generative AI 1, which signals an early build.
  • Team goals center on advanced reasoning and large language models, which overlap with frontier AI roles at DeepMind, where research engineer roles cover multimodal models that handle text with images plus audio or video together 1. No details on dedicated compute or a distinct brief, so unclear if this will be a core Gemini (Google’s flagship AI model family) site or a satellite tied to a roadmap led by Mountain View.
  • DeepMind builds on Google’s infrastructure and chips 2, so Singapore’s output hinges on access to Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) and GPUs. Google has not shared hardware allocation, which will decide if the team can run large independent experiments or support existing work.

Cloud providers and infrastructure investors should map Singapore’s AI compute landscape now

  • DeepMind’s arrival will lift demand for AI compute in Singapore, so cloud and colocation firms pitch NVIDIA H100 class or newer GPU capacity. OVHcloud prices H100 instances at $2.99 per hour 3. It plans H200 NVL and GB200, NVIDIA’s Grace Blackwell platform 3.
  • Investors with compute infrastructure firms should map which Singapore providers offer enterprise grade GPU clusters that are large scale and production ready. Track 2025 expansion plans too. DeepMind’s presence will speed up buying cycles for startups and research institutions.
