Google DeepMind backs A24 with reported $75m for AI tools
Google DeepMind said on June 22 that it had partnered with A24, a US-based independent film studio, to develop AI tools for filmmaking.
The deal reportedly includes a US$75 million investment from the Google unit.
The multiyear, nonexclusive research partnership is shaped by filmmaker feedback, with A24’s film library reportedly kept off limits to Google.
A24 Labs is reportedly prototyping an AI storyboard app to spot logistical problems in film production before shooting starts, though no rollout date or full product list has been disclosed.
The partnership comes as post-strike Hollywood labor agreements set rules on writer credit and pay, and performer consent and compensation for digital replicas, while leaving AI training on scripts unresolved.
A24 was valued at US$3.5 billion in a 2024 financing round, suggesting the US$75 million investment was more like earlier minority backing than a control deal, though terms were not disclosed.
The move adds to studio tests of AI after Netflix said earlier in 2026 it was buying Ben Affleck’s InterPositive, which makes AI tools for filmmakers, and Amazon’s MGM Studios launched an AI unit in 2025.
