Google co-founder gifts $700m in Alphabet shares
Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, has donated about US$700 million in Alphabet Inc. shares, as reported in a regulatory filing on May 21, 2025.
The filing revealed that the gift consists of 4.1 million shares, equally divided between Class A and Class C stock.

This contribution adds to Brin’s history of share donations. In 2023, he donated more than US$600 million following updates to Google’s AI search.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Strategic timing shows Brin’s pattern of giving aligned with company milestones
The US$700 million donation continues Brin’s established pattern of making significant gifts around Google’s developer events and positive stock movements.
In 2023, he donated about US$600 million in shares following Google’s AI search launch, which occurred around the time of Google’s developer conference1.
He then followed with additional gifts exceeding US$100 million in May and November 2023, suggesting a systematic approach to his philanthropic activities1.
This latest contribution coincides with Alphabet’s stock rising up to 5.6% following significant AI product announcements, potentially maximizing the value of his charitable contribution2.
The timing demonstrates how tech founders can strategically leverage market momentum to amplify their philanthropic impact, as the same number of shares donated during a market downturn would have significantly less value.
2️⃣ Personal experience continues to drive billionaire philanthropy priorities
Brin’s consistent support for Parkinson’s disease research reflects how personal connections often determine where tech wealth flows.
His mother’s diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease has made this cause particularly significant to him, leading to substantial donations to organizations like the Michael J. Fox Foundation3.
