Google Cloud expands enterprise AI offerings in Singapore
Google Cloud has announced expanded enterprise AI offerings for Singapore, including new data residency guarantees and Gemini model access at its AI Asia: Building Beyond Borders conference on August 28.
Singapore’s cloud region is among the first globally to offer data residency guarantees for AI services such as Gemini 2.5 Flash, Vertex AI Search, and NotebookLM Enterprise, letting organizations store and process data locally.
The company announced the general availability of Gemini on Google Distributed Cloud (GDC) air-gapped, and a preview of Gemini on GDC connected, supporting on-premises AI workloads for organizations with strict data requirements.
Public sector agencies, including the Centre for Strategic Infocomm Technologies, GovTech Singapore, and the Home Team Science and Technology Agency, will be early adopters of Gemini on GDC air-gapped systems.
Google Cloud’s Customer Engagement Suite is now generally available across Asia-Pacific, offering tools for AI-powered customer service.
The company is also collaborating with Singapore’s government and the National University of Singapore on AI research and secure deployment of autonomous agents.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Google’s Singapore AI push builds on years of strategic infrastructure investment
Today’s announcement represents the culmination of Google’s long-term commitment to Singapore, starting with its first cloud region launch in 2017 and a massive $850 million investment in a third data center in 201812.
This foundation enabled Google to position Singapore as what Thomas Kurian calls “the launchpad for AI in Asia.” Singapore’s government has been actively preparing for AI adoption through initiatives like the Smart Nation program and SkillsFuture training, creating an environment where 77% of the workforce is highly exposed to AI—significantly above global averages3.
The data residency guarantees and on-premises solutions directly address Singapore’s specific needs, as evidenced by GovTech’s earlier multi-cloud adoption in 2019 to support the National Digital Identity initiative while maintaining strict compliance requirements4.
2️⃣ The enterprise AI race intensifies as Google seeks to close the gap
Google’s aggressive Singapore expansion comes as the company trails competitors in AI adoption metrics, capturing only 17% of new AI case studies compared to Microsoft’s 45% and AWS’s 34%5.
However, Google Cloud’s 32% growth rate significantly outpaces AWS’s 17.5%, suggesting the company’s focused AI strategy may be gaining traction6.
The Singapore initiative targets government agencies and enterprises with specific sovereignty and security requirements that traditional cloud offerings couldn’t meet.
