Google Cloud, AWS unveil multicloud service for faster connectivity

Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud have launched a joint multicloud networking solution that allows organizations to connect their cloud services more easily.

The partnership combines AWS Interconnect – multicloud and Google Cloud’s Cross-Cloud Interconnect to enable private, high-speed network connections between the two platforms.

The companies said the new setup lets customers provision dedicated bandwidth and establish connectivity within minutes, reducing the need for manual setup and physical infrastructure.

The solution introduces an open specification for network interoperability, which both firms said is available for other providers to adopt.

Security features include encryption between edge routers and redundancy across multiple facilities.

The initiative aims to address the complexity businesses face when using multiple cloud providers and to promote a more open cloud environment.

Multicloud networking still hides egress and bandwidth costs

  • An open spec for multicloud network interoperability from AWS with Google invites third-party providers to build integrations and managed services on this standard.
  • Players in networking or security can build cross-cloud policy enforcement and monitoring dashboards. Observability vendors offer tools that collect logs, metrics, and traces for analysis. They can ship cost optimization software that runs on both platforms and helps teams handle multi-provider complexity.
  • Managed service providers (outsourced IT operations partners) and infrastructure software companies should review the spec to map the early adopter ecosystem. That work can shape products that deliver cross-cloud traffic management, compliance reporting, or bandwidth optimization for enterprises on both AWS and Google Cloud.
