Google Chrome adds Gemini prompt-saving skills
Google is rolling out a Chrome feature called Skills that lets signed-in desktop users save and reuse Gemini prompts across web pages, as the company adds more AI tools to its browser, with the feature initially limited to browsers set to English (US).
Users can save a prompt from Gemini chat history and reuse it with a slash command or the plus button, and Google said Skills can run on the current page and selected tabs, be edited later, and require confirmation for actions such as sending emails or adding calendar events.
The update comes as new competitor browsers from OpenAI, Perplexity, and The Browser Company enter the market, and Google is also launching a library of preset Skills for tasks such as productivity, shopping, recipes, and budgeting.

Skills are an early step in Google’s agent strategy
- Skills adds an early building block in Google’s plan for a “universal AI assistant” called Gemini Agent, built to carry out complex, multi-step tasks for users 1.
- Auto browse already tests this agent approach with paid subscribers. It can handle multi-step chores like comparing flight prices across dates or completing long online forms 2.
- Workspace Studio carries a similar push inside Google Workspace. It is a no-code tool that lets employees create and share AI agents for workflow automation, such as writing status reports or triaging legal notices 3.
This is an early step toward agentic shopping and commerce automation
- Skills also supports what Google calls “agentic commerce,” where AI assistants could take on more of the shopping flow from product discovery through purchase 4.
- To support that goal, Google co-developed the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). It is an open standard for online shopping interactions built with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, and Target, plus backing from Visa and Mastercard 4.
- Google says Chrome will support UCP so AI agents can act on a user’s behalf with fewer steps 2, 4. Google also says UCP will power checkout in the Gemini app and AI Mode, with payment and shipping details pre-filled through Google Pay and Google Wallet 2, 4.
