Google Chrome adds AI summaries of store reviews in US

Google has launched a new feature in its Chrome web browser that offers AI-generated summaries of store reviews.

This feature is currently available in the US for desktop users and aims to help shoppers assess stores based on product quality, pricing, customer service, and return policies.

The summaries are created using reviews from various partners, including Trustpilot, Yotpo, and Bazaarvoice.

Users can access this feature by clicking an icon next to the web address in the browser.

At this time, it is only available in English.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Google’s move follows Amazon’s successful AI review strategy from 2023

Google’s new Chrome feature mirrors Amazon’s AI-powered review summaries launched in August 2023, showing how competitive pressure influences innovation across tech giants1.

Amazon’s system helps flag defective products and provides AI-generated highlights from customer reviews to enhance the shopping experience, demonstrating the commercial potential of this approach1.

The timing suggests Google recognized Amazon’s early success with AI shopping features and is now implementing similar capabilities to remain competitive in the e-commerce advertising market.

This reflects the broader competitive dynamic where major tech companies adopt successful features pioneered by rivals, similar to how social media platforms have historically adopted each other’s popular innovations.

2️⃣ AI-generated review content raises authenticity concerns that Google must navigate

Research analyzing 26,000 Amazon product reviews found a 400% increase in AI-generated content since ChatGPT’s launch, with extreme reviews being 1.3 times more likely to be artificially created2.

Amazon sellers have specifically complained that AI review summaries misrepresent their products by disproportionately highlighting negative feedback, even when products have strong overall ratings3.

Google’s approach of aggregating reviews from multiple partners like Trustpilot and ScamAdviser may help address these authenticity issues by diversifying data sources beyond user-generated content.
