Google, Chinese AR firm Xreal forge extended partnership

Google and Xreal announced a long-term strategic partnership at CES 2026, with Google expected to invest in the Chinese AR firm later this year.

Xreal, known for its consumer smart glasses, will align its product roadmap with Google’s Android XR platform.

The partnership supports joint development of XR hardware and software, building on Project Aura, an AR headset for Android XR first introduced at Google I/O in May 2025.

Much of Project Aura’s development and manufacturing is handled by Xreal’s teams in China.

The collaboration aims to speed up integration between Android XR and Xreal’s spatial computing hardware, including the in-house X1S chip.

Both companies also plan to expand tools and documentation for developers.

The move positions Google and Xreal to compete more directly with Meta and Apple in the XR and AR market.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Android XR’s developer tools are still in preview even as partnerships expand

  • Google and XREAL announced a partnership at CES 2026 (the Consumer Electronics Show) while the Android XR (extended reality) SDK (software development kit) stays in Developer Preview 3 12. Samsung’s Galaxy XR launched in October 2025 12, and Unity (a widely used 3D game engine) Android XR support remains experimental, not for production 3.
  • Unity-built Android XR apps do not run on the Android XR Emulator (a desktop simulator for testing XR apps) today 3. Since 2025 Google added planar image tracking (detecting flat images in the real world) and object tracking (recognizing 3D objects) via Android XR Extensions (additional XR interfaces that expose device-specific features) with Unity support 14, though many features still roll out in stages. Project Aura from XREAL got a first look on December 8, 2025, with Google saying it will share more in 2026 2.

Porting specialists can capture early Android XR market demand

  • Studios that focus on Unity (a 3D game engine) and OpenXR (an open standard that helps XR apps run across different devices) can win early work. Unity 6 supports Android XR through the Unity OpenXR: Android XR package with Android XR Extensions 54. Most Android apps run on XR headsets with no changes required 6, which fuels demand for optimization and porting.
  • Tool makers can build around gaps. Unity apps do not run on the Android XR Emulator 3, and developers need correct Vulkan (a low-overhead 3D graphics application programming interface, or API) configuration for best results 78. That opens room for debugging tools, testing frameworks, and consultancies that bridge OpenXR with Android XR.
