Google to buy carbon credits from Indian startup Mitti Labs

Google has agreed to buy 1 million carbon credits from Mitti Labs, a New York- and Bengaluru-based climate-tech startup, through 2030 from projects on Indian rice farms that aim to cut methane emissions.

The companies said this was the largest publicly announced deal to date for credits generated by reducing methane in rice farming.

The four-year agreement covers Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, and is expected to reach about 100,000 hectares at peak delivery. Terms were not disclosed.

Mitti Labs said it will pay farmers to adopt practices that keep rice fields flooded for shorter periods, similar to alternate wetting and drying, in which paddies are not continuously flooded.

Studies show the approach can cut methane and save water.

The purchase expands Google’s carbon-credit activity as the company works toward its 2030 net-zero goal.

Google said its greenhouse gas emissions rose 18% from a year earlier to about 14.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2025.
