Android 16’s AI summaries remain Pixel-exclusive for now, despite broader promises

• Google says AI notification summaries are “expanding to more Android phones,” but there is no schedule. The announcement only mentions availability for eligible Pixel models, with no dates for Samsung or other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) 1.
• Summaries run on-device 2. Google has not listed hardware needs or OEM timing. They are limited to eligible Pixels for now 1.
• The notification organizer also runs on-device 2. It ships only on Pixel 9 and newer, not the 9a, with no info for other makers 1.

App developers can optimize notifications to work better with AI summaries and organizers

• Push notification platforms (services developers use to manage and deliver notifications) like OneSignal, Braze, or Airship could add tools that help apps format messages for Android 16’s summaries. They already tune for iOS delivery.
• Android 16 sorts alerts into Promotions and News 2. It also has Social and Suggested. Teams should test for misclassification or muted alerts. Then tune notification channel priorities (developer-defined categories that control alert priority and behavior) plus message structure.
• Chat apps should put important details at the start. Summaries shrink long threads into “brief snippets”, which can skip items buried later.
