Google agreed to backstop lease payments for five data centers in the US tied to Anthropic, the US-based AI startup behind Claude.

The support helped secure financing worth about US$35 billion. Broadcom, a US chip designer, helped secure the financing, while Apollo and Blackstone are providing it.

Google is also set to supply tensor processing units, or TPUs, for the sites. It would repay bondholders if Fluidstack defaults or goes bankrupt after the data centers begin operating and Fluidstack’s leases start.

Fluidstack, a UK-based AI cloud infrastructure provider, says it builds AI infrastructure and is leading Anthropic’s US$50 billion compute buildout in the US.

The support builds on an existing relationship. Anthropic said on April 6, 2026, that it would expand its use of Google Cloud and TPUs, including multiple gigawatts of TPU capacity expected to come online from 2027.

The arrangement may draw more attention because the US Federal Trade Commission in 2024 scrutinized ties involving Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon, and AI startups OpenAI and Anthropic.
