Google assets worth $129m frozen in France over Russia case

A French bailiff has temporarily frozen around €110 million (US$129 million) in assets in France related to shares owned by Google International.

The freeze follows a request from the administrator of Google’s now-defunct Russian business and is linked to a Moscow arbitration court ruling that found Google guilty of an illegal dividend payment in 2021.

Similar enforcement efforts are underway in Spain, Turkey, and South Africa.

The freeze is temporary, and legal proceedings for formal recognition and enforcement must begin within a month, or it will lapse.

Google can contest the freeze in court, and full enforcement in France could take up to 18 months.

Google Russia filed for bankruptcy in 2022 after its bank account was seized by authorities.
