Google, Anthropic reject ads in AI chatbots, diverge from OpenAI
Google and Anthropic have said they do not plan to introduce ads in their AI chatbots, unlike OpenAI, which recently began testing ads on ChatGPT.
Hassabis stressed that trust is key for AI assistants and warned that ads could risk undermining this trust.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said they do not need to monetize a billion free users now and denied being in a “death race” with others.
OpenAI announced on January 17 it would test ads on ChatGPT in the US to offset high costs, assuring users that responses and privacy would not be affected.
OpenAI made US$13 billion last year but expects to burn US$17 billion by 2026.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The financial viability and regulatory risks of ChatGPT’s ad model remain unproven
- Ads are being introduced in part to help cover a projected $17 billion cash burn by 2026.
- Proof that the plan can pay for itself still has to be established.
- Numbers like revenue per user, per-query serving costs, and the share of chats that can be monetized have not been laid out in OpenAI’s announcement, so the scale of any offset remains hard to judge 1.
- Clearer guardrails are also being awaited on how ads will follow emerging AI transparency guidance from the IAB (Interactive Advertising Bureau, an ad-industry standards group), as scrutiny rises from the FTC (Federal Trade Commission, the US consumer-protection watchdog) over deceptive AI marketing 23.
A new market for AI ad verification and compliance tools is emerging
- Ad-tech operators and investors are being pushed toward new measurement tools by OpenAI’s ad platform plus Google’s “AI Overviews” and “AI Mode”.
- Cross-platform verification products can be built around brand safety, so ads are kept away from sensitive or regulated topics that OpenAI says will be avoided, such as health, mental health, or politics 4.
- Attribution features can also be added, since conversion tracking from a chat interface is harder than from a standard search click 5.
- Reg-tech (regulatory technology) firms can sell compliance-as-a-service that automatically checks placements for transparency plus alignment with evolving IAB frameworks and FTC standards 23.
