Google and Character.AI’s founders Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas are facing a lawsuit after the death of a teenager.

The lawsuit was filed by Megan Garcia, the mother of the deceased, alleging wrongful death, negligence, deceptive trade practices, and product liability.

The suit claims that 14-year-old Sewell Setzer III took his own life shortly after his last interaction with Character.AI’s chatbots in February.

The chatbots were modeled after fictional characters, including Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones. The platform is accused of providing unlicensed mental health care through psychotherapy-like chatbot interactions.

Setzer engaged with mental-health-related AI chatbots, such as “Therapist” and “Are You Feeling Lonely,” on the Character.AI platform.
