Google uses AI to block 39.2m ad accounts in 2024

Google announced the suspension of 39.2 million advertiser accounts in 2024, marking a significant increase from the previous year.

This action is part of the company’s efforts to combat advertising fraud, using enhanced detection methods including large language models (LLMs) to identify issues such as business impersonation and fraudulent payment details.

In the United States, Google suspended 39.2 million accounts and removed 1.8 billion ads throughout the year.

In India, the second-largest internet market, 2.9 million accounts were suspended, and 247.4 million ads were removed, primarily for violations related to financial services and gambling.

Globally, Google suspended 5 million accounts for scam-related violations and removed nearly half a billion scam-related ads.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Ad fraud has grown into a hundred-billion-dollar problem

Google’s drastic increase in advertiser account suspensions reflects the escalating scale of digital ad fraud across the industry.

Juniper Research forecasts that ad fraud costs will increase to $100 billion by 2023, showing why platforms are intensifying their enforcement efforts 1.

The World Federation of Advertisers estimates that 10-30% of all digital advertising isn’t actually seen by real users due to fraud and viewability issues 1.

Previous major fraud operations demonstrate the sophistication of these schemes, like the “3ve” network which generated over 3 billion fraudulent bid requests daily before being dismantled in a coordinated takedown involving the FBI 2.

This criminal enterprise was so advanced that it required collaboration between Google, cybersecurity firms, and law enforcement, ultimately resulting in criminal charges against eight individuals 3.

The surge in account suspensions signals that major platforms recognize fraud is no longer just a fringe issue but a fundamental threat to the digital advertising ecosystem.

2️⃣ The anti-fraud arms race is driving AI adoption across platforms

Google’s deployment of LLMs for fraud detection represents a significant evolution in the industry’s approach to combating increasingly sophisticated scammers.
