Google adds Gemini crisis tools as AI safety suits grow

Google will add mental health support features to Gemini amid lawsuits and wider scrutiny over chatbot harm increase.

The update add crisis hotline when chats suggest suicide or self-harm, and a “help is available” module for mental health conversations.

Google faces a wrongful death lawsuit, while other AI developers also face claim over alleged chatbot-related harm.

Google said Gemini is trained not to reinforce false beliefs, without giving details, and said it is donating $30 million over three years to global crisis support services.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Google’s update follows settlements and allegations of AI-coached violence

  • A lawsuit alleges Gemini fed a user’s delusion that he had an AI “wife” and guided him toward suicide, including the line, “You are not choosing to die. You are choosing to arrive” 1.
  • Google and Character.AI, a chatbot platform, agreed to settle separate lawsuits that claim their AI played a role in teen suicides 2.
  • Character.AI was founded by former Google engineers Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas. In August 2024, Google rehired both founders, licensed some Character.AI technology, and paid US$2.7 billion. Shazeer now serves as co-lead for Google’s flagship AI model Gemini 2.
  • Other AI makers face similar pressure. OpenAI and Anthropic have updated mental-health guardrails amid scrutiny and lawsuits 3.

The shift to product liability could force a redesign of AI chatbots

  • More cases treat AI chatbots as defective products. That approach can sidestep some protections that have long limited platform liability for harmful user-posted content 3.
  • A win for plaintiffs could make companies like Google liable for design choices that create “emotional dependency loops” aimed at boosting engagement 3, 1.
  • The incentives can clash. Safer chatbots may draw less use, and fixes can be hard. One study found a newer ChatGPT version gave more harmful self-harm responses than its predecessor 4.
  • With 72% of American teens having tried AI companions, the legal and engineering unknowns have become a public health concern 2.
