Google adds chat import to Gemini to rival ChatGPT
Google has added an import option in its Gemini AI assistant that lets users bring chat history from other AI tools, as it competes with ChatGPT and Claude.
The company said Gemini users can upload files containing conversations from other AI providers using the new import feature in Gemini.
Google also published a suggested prompt to help users summarize data from other assistants before importing it into Gemini.
The update comes as AI firms add switching tools to win and retain users, after Anthropic rolled out a similar memory import feature earlier this month.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Google’s import feature doubles as a way to gather data
- Google is building the import function with two paths. One uses a prompt to paste summarized preferences. The other uploads archived chat histories in .zip files up to 5GB 1.
- Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says imported data from other AI platforms goes into a user’s Gemini Apps Activity. Google uses it the same way as other Gemini Apps Activity to improve services, including training generative AI models 2.
- Anthropic’s Claude takes a different route. It uses a prompt-based method to transfer preferences and memories. Anthropic’s documentation describes a memory import flow, not bulk uploads of full chat histories 3.
Barriers between AI ecosystems are weakening
- These import tools cut the hassle of moving between assistants, which lowers switching costs that often keep people on one platform 1.
- As personal context and chat history travel more easily, the underlying large language models may start to look interchangeable.
- The fight may move beyond base model quality. More weight may land on user experience, app connections, and privacy policies 4.
- This push could nudge companies toward standard formats for AI “memory,” which could make switching assistants as simple as changing web browsers.
