Goldman Sachs unit co-leads $120m series D in insurtech firm Bestow

Bestow, a Dallas-based insurtech company, has raised US$120 million in series D funding to enhance its software offerings and introduce new underwriting capabilities.

The funding round was co-led by Goldman Sachs Alternatives’ Growth Equity and Smith Point Capital, with participation from existing investors.

The series D investment includes US$75 million in primary funding and US$45 million in secondary investments.

Bestow also secured a US$50 million credit facility from TriplePoint Capital.

CEO Melbourne O’Banion said the company’s valuation has roughly doubled since its 2020 series C round, though no specific figure was disclosed.

Founded in 2017, Bestow shifted in 2024 from direct-to-consumer insurance to providing SaaS tools for insurers after selling its consumer business.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Insurtech business model pivots reflect industry maturation

Bestow’s transition from a direct-to-consumer insurance provider to a B2B software company mirrors a larger trend in the insurtech sector, where startups increasingly find sustainable growth by enabling established insurers rather than competing directly with them.

This shift aligns with 2024 funding patterns, where B2B SaaS startups captured 43% of total insurtech investment, the highest proportion in the industry’s history 1.

Successful insurtechs often pivot their business models as they mature, moving from disruptive direct-to-consumer approaches toward enterprise solutions that leverage their technological advantages 2.

The industry’s projected growth from $5.4 billion in 2022 to $152 billion by 2030 suggests substantial opportunities for companies that successfully navigate this transition from insurgent to enabler 3.

This pattern isn’t unique to Bestow. Many insurtechs discover that their technology infrastructure ultimately proves more valuable than their consumer business, leading to strategic repositioning to capture enterprise value.

2️⃣ Strategic partnerships drive insurtech adoption

Bestow’s customer roster—including major insurers like Nationwide, Transamerica, and USAA—demonstrates how traditional insurance companies are embracing partnerships with technology startups to accelerate their digital transformation.
